Amigurumi - Say that 10 times in a row!

Amigurumi crocheted mugs - SUPER CUTE!When designing a virtual world in which roleplaying is a focus, I run into all sorts of interesting questions and conundrums. In a low tech world much like the one in our own history, I believe that children looked for entertainment much like they do now, and many children probably loved animals much like the children of today. In today’s world, we have tons and tons of stuffed animals, many of them extremely life-like, all of them made with faux fur or synthetic fibers. What if that wasn’t readily available? So, while I was Michaels shopping for sales to support my other hobbies, I ran into the answer and a new addiction - amigurumi. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of creating animals by knitting or crocheting the parts, stuffing them, and sewing them together. I’d actually had exposure to this already from my relatives in Thailand, but I hadn’t realized they actually had a name.

So, this is my new passion, and I attribute it all to Ana Paula Rimoli. She doesn’t know me from my neighbor, but it was her book that caught my eye at Michaels and gave me visuals for describing items in text. I definitely plan to try out a few of these patterns and adapt them in a more fantastical style. My first step is to order her book from Amazon. I flipped through it at Michaels, and it had at least thirty patterns in it. The only problem with that is that I’ve only crocheted from Japanese patterns which are very different from American ones. Luckily, I’ve got a friend who can help me decipher all that stuff. (No, I’m not Japanese, but all my crochet books are Japanese.) My ultimate goal is to be able to create items that can be uploaded as pictures to help enhance our newest game and its custom, semi-graphical client. We’ll see how that goes.

In the end, all my hobbies tend to intertwine and mix. I’ll fill you readers in at some point about what goes through my head while I’m cooking and how it relates to our crafting system. Stay tuned!

I remember my grandmother making toys for me like this when I was young. I’m sure that I still have a few of them someplace. Not all were animals though. In particular, I remember this huge (well, it seemed huge to me when I was a kid) crocheted clown. It was my favorite toy ever until my brother puked all over it.
